Traverse City, Michigan, with a population of 14,532 is
considered the Cherry Capital of the World in the northern part of the
Lower Peninsula. In addition to cherries, Traverse City is one of the wine
production centers of the Midwest.
Tourism is a key industry for Traverse City, both winter
and summer. The mild summer climate draws visitors for upscale golf
resorts, freshwater beaches, and vineyards. In the winter with its
impressive snowfall, Traverse City is second only to Mackinaw City for
skiing. The annual Traverse City Film Festival and the National Cherry
Festival, both in July, draw large numbers of tourists to the area.
Traveling to and from Traverse City can be done by the
new Cherry Capital Airport, as well as other regional airports and the
Chippewa County International Airport in Sault Ste. Marie, 174 miles to
the north.
