Music lovers have long flocked to Tennessee.
Memphis is the site of Graceland, Elvis Presley's home, and Nashville is
this nation's country-western music capital. The state is also
dotted with Civil War sites and graveyards, making Tennessee an
appealing retirement destination for American history buffs. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy Great Smoky Mountains National Park, The Land
Between the Lakes and the many lakes of the TVA system.
Tennessee's climate is humid and temperate, which appeals to many
retirees. Its economy is based on manufacturing, mining and
agriculture. In 1784, settlers here formed the state of Franklin,
which was disbanded when they were allowed to vote with North Carolina.
Tennessee joined the Union as the 16th state in 1796 and joined the
Confederacy in 1861.
