Providence is the capital of Rhode Island and its most
populous city with 175,255 residents. The climate is humid continental
with hot summers, cold winters and high humidity year round
As Providence was one of the first industrial cities in
the U.S., manufacturing of metals, textiles, etc. were big to the economy.
Today, major manufacturing has declined, but Providence is still one of
the largest providers of jewelry and silverware.
Higher education is important to Providence, as Ivy
League university Brown, is located in the city. Other well-known
institutions include Johnson & Wales, Providence College, Community
College of Rhode Island, and University of Rhode Island, to name a few.
Providence is served by T.F. Green Airport in Warwick,
as well as regional North Central State Airport and Quonset State Airport.
Amtrak also provides transportation, particularly for commuters to
downtown and the State House.
With a 1,200 acre park system, many museums, the First
Baptist Church in America, as well as a zoo and botanical center,
Providence provides a wealth of activities.
