Princess Anne, Maryland is a very small town, with a population of
about 2,000 people, located in southern
Maryland in Somerset County. The town got its name from King George II, who named the
spot after his daughter, Princess Anne of Great Britain. Most of the
historic buildings in the area have been preserved, and the town has
almost 300 structures listed on the National Register of Historic
Places. Princess Anne is also home to the University of Maryland Eastern
Shore, founded in 1886.
There is much to do and see in Princess Anne. Because of the town’s
history, there are quite a few historic buildings and house museums, as
well as walking tours. Many Federal and Victorian houses line
the streets, all of which are protected and preserved to retain their
original grace and charm. In October, the town celebrates its history
with Olde Princess Anne Days where garden tours, craft demonstrations
and music are abundant. There are also a lot of opportunities for
shopping, particularly for who love antiques.
Prince Anne, Maryland is a town that was built on the original
principles of this nation and still has the national as well as
community pride that makes it a great place to retire.
