Situated snugly between six states, Pennsylvania is
known for its diversity, history and peaceful way of life. It
is 180 miles north to south and 310 miles east to west and is the 6th
most populous state in the USA; its largest cities are Philadelphia and
Pittsburgh. It is also home to the nation's first zoo, the
Philadelphia Zoo, and can claim America's first hospital, first library
and first insurance company. The state is also noted for
having the highest concentration of Amish in the United States, and the
Pennsylvania Dutch region in south-central Pennsylvania is a favorite
for sightseers (virtually the entire southeastern quarter of
Pennsylvania is Dutch territory, except for the extreme southeastern
tip, which is Quaker).
Pennsylvania is the second state in the Union in the
number of church members and first in the number of church
organizations. It is the only truly landlocked state of
the original thirteen states and is the slowest-growing of any major
state in the nation. Pennsylvania's cost of living is right at the
national average, with housing prices, including apartments for rent,
coming in at only 1% above the national average. The capital is in
Harrisburg.
