North Carolina

North Carolina's climate is mild temperate with cool winters and hot summers.  The state has long been a popular beach resort destination, and wildlife preserves and outstanding golf courses are other reasons North Carolina attracts tourists from all over the nation.

In the western mountains, 6,684 foot Mount Mitchell is the highest point in the Appalachians.   The Blue Ridge Parkway offers a tour of the spectacular scenery there and should not be missed.  The state's economic foundation is based on manufacturing and agriculture, and in 1903, the first successful airplane flight was at Kitty Hawk.  The first English attempts at colonization failed on Roanoke Island in 1585 and 1587. North Carolina became the 12th state in 1789 but left the Union to join the Confederacy in 1861.
