General New Mexico Information
New Mexico is a southwestern state bordered by Colorado to the north, Oklahoma and Texas to the east, Mexico to the south, and Arizona to the west.
With a population density of 15 people per square mile, it is the sixth most sparsely inhabited
state, ranking 36th in population, and is known for its dry climate and brilliant blue
skies. Its collection of volcanoes is so extraordinary that there is nowhere
else on the continent where one can live in one of several major metropolitan areas and
be so close to so many different types of volcanoes.
The state is as distinctive as its rich cultural
history; it is often said that New Mexico is a blend of three cultures, the Native American, the Spanish, and the Anglo,
and it is a place to see the culture of all three of these
groups. Well-known people like American frontiersman Kit Carson, Indian warrior
Geronimo, and Billy the Kid have all been a part of the state's history.
Many who claim Hispanic heritage are the descendants of the first European settlers of this area.
Wonderful Santa Fe boasts a fascinating past and is home to the Chapel of Our Lady of Guadalupe, built in 1795.
This beautiful town, steeped in history and an art-lovers delight, has great little shops for
retirees to explore and wonderful restaurants perfect for a special evening out.
Albuquerque is the metropolitan area of Central New Mexico, and it has a great mix of nature,
history and multiculturalism.
