Profiled Town:
Camden, Maine
General Maine Information
Maine has long been a vacation favorite for northeastern
city dwellers. Hiking, fishing, hunting and sailing are just a few of
the popular outdoor activities that attract retirees. The state is
in many way two states, one with a bustling seacoast that swells with
tourists in the summer months, and the other the rural inland. Maine's
climate is temperate but the winters are cold, something many seniors
enjoy. Maine is famous for its lobster, but the economy is also
dependent on manufacturing forest products and agriculture. It is
thought Europeans first saw what is now the United States when Vikings
visited the Maine coast, and in 1755 French colonists in Acadia, Maine
were deported to Louisiana where they became the Cajuns. The state
was part
of Massachusetts until it became the 23d state in 1820.
