Lawrence, Kansas

Lawrence, Kansas is located in the northeast corner of the state. It is just forty-one miles from Kansas City and twenty miles east of Topeka, and sits on the banks of the Wakarusa and Kansas rivers. The population of the city is around 80,000. The climate in the area ranges anywhere from 20 degrees in the winter to 90 degrees in the summer with most of the precipitation for the year falling in the spring months.

 

 Lawrence is home to the University of Kansas. Though it has the characteristics of the typical college town, Lawrence still retains much of its rich history through historic buildings and is proud to have been the first city to in the state to have an operating railroad, as well as the honor of being site of where the state’s first telephone was installed in the nineteenth century.

For those of you looking for modern fun, Lawrence does have many locally owned coffee shops, two microbreweries, and a radical library. In May the city hosts their Art in the Park Festival. In June, Lawrence is the site of the annual Wakarusa Music and Camping Festival. It is a four day event that takes place in Clinton State Park.

Lawrence is also a big sports town. The city is the home of the Kansas Jayhawks basketball team, a favorite among the locals. The football team has also recently seen some good times with a great 2007 season and a victory in the Orange Bowl.

Lawrence has the best of both worlds for young and old. If you are looking for a quiet, but youthful atmosphere, Lawrence has what you want.
