Las Cruces, New Mexico

Back to New Mexico

Las Cruces is a city in Dona Ana County, New Mexico with a population of over 86,000, which makes it the second largest city in the state. The Organ Mountains are to the east of Las Cruces, and the New Mexico State University makes its home there.

The annual Whole Enchilada Fiesta is held in Las Cruces with the main attraction being a very large (usually 10 feet in diameter) flat red enchilada, which has been noted in the Guinness World Records for the largest flat enchilada. The festival offers live music, rides, food vendors, etc. The Southern New Mexico State Fair is held a few days after the Whole Enchilada Fiesta. A known feature about Las Cruces is that Billy the Kid resided here for a short time in his life, and Pat Garrett (Billy the Kid’s killer) also lived in Las Cruces.

Las Cruces temperatures can reach into the 90’s in the summer with virtually no rainfall for hot, dry weather. In the winter, the average temperature is around 40 degrees.
