Charleston, South Carolina

Back to South Carolina

Charleston, South Carolina is located on the southeastern coast of the state and is the second most populous city in the state, behind Columbia, with more than 107,000 people.

The city experiences a humid climate with mild winters and hot, humid summers. There is significant rainfall throughout the year, and temperatures range from the mid sixties to the low nineties.

Charleston was a major Civil War location and was  the first state to secede from the Union.  After the defeat of the Confederacy, the city of Charleston went through a major reconstruction period. Since then, it has thrived and now is home to many great wonders, including the live oaks covered in Spanish moss and the historic Rainbow Row, giving the city a vibrant boost of color on the faces of some houses in the historic district.

Charleston is an enthusiastic culture and arts city.   It hosts an annual 17-day art festival called the Spoleto Festival USA.   The two week African and Caribbean MOJA Arts Festival.    Because Charleston was a colonial city, many historic buildings and sites are ready for exploration.   Charleston is also a sports town, being home to many major and minor teams, including the professional soccer team the Charleston Battery.

Charleston maintains the old, hometown southern feel all the while embracing modern culture and style. It’s no wonder many choose this delightful destination for retirement.
